For moms like me who likes to go treasure hunting at thrift shops, here's some tips for you by Lynne Ticknor, M.A. from the Parent & Child magazine.
Shopping for used goods can yield diamonds in the rough - like barely used dishes, vintage clothing, or antique furniture - for great prices if you're in the know. Here's what to look for and what to avoid:
LOOK FOR:
+ Crafty Materials. Lightly worn crayons, pencils, drawing pads, and paints are as useful as new ones.
+ Baby and Kids' Clothes. They're often in mint condition because little ones grow so quickly.
+ Wool Sweaters. You'll pay a tenth of what a new one would cost. Just have it professionally dry-cleaned or use an at-home product like Dryel.
+ Plats, Bowls, and Mugs. These usually go rock-bottom prices. Make sure they have no chips or crack.
AVOID:
+ Baby/Toddler Books. They've most likely been mouthed, chewed, sucked and slobbered on.
+ Stuffed Animals and Hats. Even the most adorable ones can be havens for germs or head lice.
+ Cutlery. Unless you can guarantee it's stainless steel, you risk ingesting trust.
