* The best flat irons feature ceramic (not metal) plates. Always look for plates with ceramic layers baked on rather than a thin layer of ceramic over metal.

* In general, a smaller flat iron (those with plates that are an inch to an inch and a half wide) will work well for most hair types; if your hair is very long or thick, however, you may want to consider an iron with a wider plate - but keep in mind that wider plates are harder to control.
